Meet Perusi, who loves eating carrots from her garden!

Joy Kauffman, MPH

Jesus desires all of us to live life abundantly (John 10:10) and to share that life with others. In Uganda, over one-third of children under five years are severely malnourished.  Deficiencies, especially of Vitamin A and iron, compromise their health.

Meet a 28-year-old woman named Perusi, mother of 3 boys and 2 girls. She is a farmer and had been raising soybeans for a long time but like almost all other Ugandans she didn’t give them to her children.  Now, after the cooking class, she makes soy milk and other simple products for her kids.  She says, “I feed my family and they look healthier than before I had the training.”  She also was one of 54 families that FARM STEW helped to start a garden this year. She goes on, “I now have a beautiful vegetable garden which was as a result of FARM STEW providing me with vegetable seedlings and encouraging me to take good care of them. I could take two years without eating carrots but now they are in my garden and I eat them whenever I want.”

Why do carrots matter?  The orange color in the carrots represent the presence of vitamin A.  Vitamin A is what boosts immunity, preserves eyesight and ultimately can save lives.* The ability for a family to grow its own vitamin A source is an ingredient for abundant life.

Carrots can literally save lives. With your help, we can change the future for Perusi and her family!

"I am 14 years old, and I started my period this year. My first day I felt shy and I missed school... It is not easy to find pads in my village and the few here are very expensive to buy. These new pads are going to protect me when I am having my period. Since they are reusable, I am not going to worry anymore when my periods come!"
