Milk From A Seed?

Everything is ready for mashing soybeans.

“When I first heard about soy milk, I thought it was a joke. I wondered how a seed could produce milk. Only animals can do that!” exclaimed Mrs. Mukisa. She stifled a giggle as she listened to FARM STEW trainer Joanita teach about turning soybeans into milk. “I was laughing deep inside because I knew it was impossible. I expected her to fail,” she said.

The next day, Joanita brought her soaked soybeans and put them into the mortar. She asked Mrs. Mukisa to start pounding the soybeans. She reluctantly began. However, to her surprise, something began to happen. “Guess what? Even before we poured water into the mortar, I already saw a sign of milk! Thank God I had not said a word about my negative mindset!” she laughed.

After working hard it's looking like milk!

Not only was she amazed that milk could be made from soybeans, but she was also surprised by how good it tasted. “I realized that it was real milk, and trust me, it was sweet!” she said, “Since then, I have been making it for my family, and we no longer lack milk.”

The ability to make affordable, nutritious milk is a great blessing to families like Mrs. Mukisa’s. “Since FARM STEW trainers started working in the Kanama Village, members of this community have been so interested in our meals training,” said Joanita. “Only a few homes have cows that can produce milk, and buying milk is very expensive. When villagers do buy milk, they add lots of water so it will be enough for the whole family, which makes it not nutritious. Worse still, when cows are sick or treated with medicine, owners still sell their milk for human consumption, which causes health problems. Thankfully, in FARM STEW training, we teach villagers how to prepare soya milk which is cheap, nutritious, and disease-free!”

Thanks to the continued work of dedicated trainers like Joanita and the support of our FARM STEW family, people like Mrs. Mukisa can afford to give their families safe, nutritious food. All because milk can come from seeds, not just cows!
