Nyamugari community is located in mugamba commune province of Burundi. Nyamugari, one of the six hills of Nyagasasa zone, is home to people living in deep poverty. One of the main challenges is lack of clean water. Some residents walk long distances to fetch water and the available sources (like springs) are few and insufficient. Some households have farmland but lack of manure (organic fertilizer) makes it difficult to improve soil fertility. Buying chemical fertilizers is hard due to high costs. Many still live in houses made of the grass or poorly constructed huts, offering little protection from weather and insecurity. The community suffers from poor nutrition: there is no dietary diversity or balance and some families eat only once a day, usually in the evening. Some families live in extreme deprivation, lacking even basic necessities like soap and some go days without earning any money at all. In Nyamugari community, most households don’t have proper latrines, which increases sanitation related diseases.
